When considering our target audience for an Action/Thriller or well for any genre of film there are some aspects of people we must look at first so we can match our film to the greatest target audience possible for your genre and film. The greater the film fits the profile of our target audience the more likely you are to reach a higher profit margin, this is due to the fact if your film suits peoples taste and needs then people will pay to watch it.
Demographics, the age of our target audience, we are aiming for the age groups between teens to 30s, more specifically we are aiming for 15-25 year olds. Gender, we are aiming our film at both genders but it will suit the male gender more and potentially will be enjoyed more by the male population. Next is class, class is a big factor in target audience as the actors involved, speech used, body language and so much more can either attract or repel a target class, our film specifically will be aiming at working class to middle class, aspirers will look up to the film and will be interested in this type of movie. Race, does not often concern people in films but it is still your target audience so you may aim a particular type of film to a specific race but again this minimizes your target audience and overall profit, our film is aimed at any race. Geographical location, this plays a large part in target audience , you must find areas which suit your audience, for advertising, promotion and viewing of the film, these are the people which are going to watch it so aim for areas with a large audience to suit your film.
i believe the largest factor of target audience is gender as boys and girls have such different views on films and their ideas of entertainment, here you can see out of action/thriller movie views 59% were from the male population and 41% female. action thriller is a good genre to use as females often prefer thrillers to males and males prefer action, with the two put together as one it attracts both genders and widens the target audience of the film. The graph below is comparing cinema audience from the demographics of Age, Gender and Class from the age 15+ compared to the population. This graph will give us an idea of our target audiences for Action as it is aimed at the young and upmarket cinemagoers that will be commonly viewing films at the cinema within this genre. This graph shows that genrally there is a slight larger percentage viewing from females over males which means we loose part of our target audience already as action appeals largely to the male audience.
This table is showing the results of a survey for the film wanted, this was taken of the pearl and dean buisness planner website which again emphasises the male domination of views in action and the age of 15-24 year olds shows up again as they have the most cinema views within this survey.
Below we have a quick questionaire i have created and asked the people around my school that take media to answer to help me with my target audience research, because this was answered at random when i could find the students i did not manage to get all the students in for the questionaire unfortunately but i have counted the results and put forward the final result for each question.
Our Target audience questionaire
would our film be better matched to the male or female population ?
Male? Female?
What age group would most likely view our film?
4-6? 7-11? 12-14? 15-24? 25-34? 35-44? 45+?
what sort of psychographic would watch our film?
strugglers? aspirers? explorers?
Question 1 answer = Male population
Question 2 answer = A tie between 12-14 and 15-24
Question 3 answer = Aspirers
The first question i agree with and believe the male population are more matched to our film this is true, the second question our film was aimed at 15-24 year olds as our film was aimed with an age rating of 15 but because of the action people believed the 12-14 year olds would be intrested which is potentially true. Finally question 3 aspirers is corect, people aspiring and relating themselves to this kind of movie are often the target audience you recieve in this action thriller genre.
